Black Americans are, on the whole, about twice as likely as White Americans to develop high blood pressure. This likelihood also holds for westernized Black Africans when compared to White Africans. Researchers have hypothesized that this predisposition in westernized Blacks may reflect an interaction between western high-salt diets and genes that adapted to an environmental scarcity of salt. Which of the following statements about present-day, westernized Black Africans, if true, would most tend to confirm the researchers' hypothesis? (A) The blood pressures of those descended from peoples situated throughout their history in Senegal and Gambia, where salt was always available, are low. (B) The unusually high salt consumption in certain areas of Africa represents a serious health problem. (C) Because of their blood pressure levels, most White Africans have markedly decreased their salt consumption. (D) Blood pressures are low among the Yoruba, who, throughout their history, have been situated far inland from sources of sea salt and far south of Saharan salt mines. (E) No significant differences in salt metabolism have been found between those people who have had salt available throughout their history and those who have not. |

IMO B Genes in Africans maintain the blood pressure for low salt consumptions---> High salt consumption by Africans will cause a health problem. |

I eliminated it as I tht its not mentionting abt "High Pressure".. "health problem" is too general IMO bmlaud wrote: IMO B

B - incorrect - The unusually high salt consumption in certain areas of Africa represents a serious health problem. D - incorrect - Blood pressures are low among the Yoruba, who, throughout their history, have been situated far inland from sources of sea salt and far south of Saharan salt mines |

I go with E now. Option E serves as an assumption that is required to compare Africans and westerners. |

E - incorrect - No significant differences in salt metabolism have been found ... - irrelevant ... weakens Apply logical reasoning IF A THEN B => IF NOT B THEN NOT A |

I have some doubts on this question. My understanding is Adapted genes---> Black ( irrespective of American or African) Normal genes ----> White Cause: Adapted genes; Effect: High BP To support: If cause is absent, effect is also absent => White people should not have a problem of High BP ( For high salt diets) Option C says the opposite ??? If I consider Africans have adapted genes and Americans have normal genes(irrespective of their skin colours) then Option C would be correct but then the premise that "Black Americans are about twice as likely as White Americans to develop high blood pressure. " would go wrong??? Can you please help me out? Thanks |

Yep C is not the answer OA: A Stem says Westernized Black Americans have genes that adapted to an environmental scarcity of salt => high salt diets => high blood pressure A says - The blood pressures of those descended from peoples situated throughout their history in Senegal and Gambia, where salt was always available, are low => genes did not adapted to an environmental scarcity of salt as they lived where the salt was always available...thus low Blood pressure..this acts like an evidence Says: have genes that adapted to an environment where salt was always available => high salt diets => Blood pressure is low... Bit of clue from here too |
